Effective restoration requires a holistic approach that understands the connectivity and complexity of interactions within an ecosystem. It addresses the root causes of habitat degradation and species decline and focuses on restoring the processes and relationships that shape these ecosystems. Indigenous leadership and community engagement are crucial for effective restoration. Each restoration project undertaken by Redd Fish is prioritized by the nuučaanuł nations, including hiškʷiiʔatḥ (Hesquiaht), ʕaaḥuusʔatḥ (Ahousaht), ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ (Tla-o-qui-aht), Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ (Ucluelet), and tukʷaaʔatḥ (Toquaht) Nations. Adopting a two-eyed seeing approach, Redd Fish and the nations integrate Indigenous knowledge and governance into our efforts, recognizing that Indigenous-led stewardship is vital for achieving true and lasting recovery.
