Freshwater ecosystems and wild Pacific salmon are inextricably linked. For thousands of years, returning salmon have nourished the rivers, lands and people while shaping and feeding the landscapes for the next generation. On the west coast of Vancouver Island and throughout the Pacific Northwest, much of the freshwater habitat has been damaged by early logging practices. Habitat loss is one of the leading causes in the decline in wild salmon populations. Foresty-related impacts to a watershed can take decades to fully develop and can persist for hundreds of years. Without watershed restoration, it is unlikely that wild salmon will be able to recover.
