Andy MacKinnon is a forest ecologist who lives on southern Vancouver Island. He also works, occasionally, with Redd Fish Restoration. He is a retired Professional Forester and Professional Biologist who worked for the BC Forest Service for three decades, mostly on BC’s coast, where he was responsible for ecosystem classification and mapping and a program of forest ecology research. For many years, Andy co-taught forest ecology field courses with Gisele Martin in Tla-o-qui-aht territory, and with Jim Pojar in Huu-ay-aht (Bamfield) and Haida (Haida Gwaii) territories. Andy and Jim are co-authors of six best-selling books about the plants of western North America. Andy is also co-author of the Royal BC Museum’s Handbook “Mushrooms of British Columbia”, and President of the South Vancouver Island Mycological Society. He has co-taught the Raincoast Education Society’s “Mushrooms of the West Coast” course for more than a decade. Andy is also an enthusiastic advocate for conservation, and currently serves as Board Chair of the Habitat Acquisition Trust (HAT, southern Vancouver Island’s land trust).
